Yes, New

On Friday, the news was reporting that Obama is at ease discussing race.

Last Thursday, I had a conversation about race with two co-workers that we literally could not have had the week before. This election has opened the way for so many people to talk about race -- it smashed limitations we have all labored under ... always.

It is as if we knew there were some limitations so painful that they could not be mentioned -- some things we could not change even for dear friends and folks we loved. Let me sigh with relief. Just by winning the election, Obama has brought on a great change. And God willing, he will serve two full terms, bearing a proof that we could have no other way.

I'm going to reserve judgment on whether Obama should serve two terms, but his success has made things better for race relations. Because he can talk about it, we can, too. As he mentioned in his speech on race several months ago, there are many attitudes that both whites and blacks have about each other that we haven't dared discuss with the other. Since he comes from both black and white parents, he understands both.
