"If This Goes On -- "

The title above is a quote from Robert Heinlein, and also one of the three basic premises of Science Fiction.

Today, they are also a warning to John McCain, Sarah Palin, and those people at their rallies who scream and cheer at suggestions of hate and violence. The Baltimore Sun has an editorial warning those candidates that they are walking a line that they need to cut short -- a line that is encouraging venom, hatred, and violence. This country does not need to have candidates going around acting as if their opponents are terrorists.

If this goes on, and the hate fest escalates, it could mean lives lost and mob actions. We do not need that. If this goes on, for generations the name "Republican" could become a stink in the nostrils of decent folk.

The candidates must put a stop to their craven techniques, and disassociate themselves from nascent mob behavior.

This must be stopped ... it must not go on.

Indeed it should stop, but I don't see much sincerity in the effort by McCain. It has gone past ugly and into dangerous.

Truly, I don't disagree with your prescription, but we're seven years past Andrew Sullivan's slavering description of coastal liberals moving en masse to the side of islamofascism and Megan McArdle's (undoubtedly delivered to the doorman) lumber to the head of war opponents.

Remember what happened to people who walked down the wrong streets in NY in 2004?

John Wayne got megadittos for plowing down teenaged girls with the wrong politics back in the late sixties, when Reagan was calling them simians. It's what they do.

Except we found in both Denver and Minneapolis recently and time after time, liberals who remotely approach such behavior are arrested, assaulted, firehosed, threatened and intimidated. We lose because all we ask for is a cessation of this despicable behavior by the right. we lose again.

Heinlein was a prophet - as a forty year reader of everything he has written, numerous times, I've Long thought we were living through the storyline as the the timeline unfolds... and they ain't even close to being over.

Hard as it may be, it'll get ugly before it gets pretty.

. . .

ha ha!

LOVE the CAPITALS . . . on the post by . . . Salty?

However I am a bit suspicious that there are no exclamation marks added.

Surely, your average, knuckle-scraping, butt- scratching, finger-sniffing redneck would round off with at least three !!!

All in all, lack of exclamation marks confirms my suspicion that we are dealing senior republican operatives, rather than your average burn-in-hell (or Iraq) right-winger.
