Our Daily Bread

Wheat flour prices are way, way up.

I'm not the only one who remembers the End Times prophecy about a quart of wheat going for a day's wages. Are we heading towards prices that high? Well, for much of the Afghan public, wheat is already moving beyond their means, and has been for the last year.

The 2007 US wheat acreage was up over 2006 due to high prices, but it still wasn't enough. Global grain inventories are expected to drop this year with demand for diverting corn to biofuels and weather problems keeping demand, and hence prices, high.

As climate continues to destabilize and more land is rendered unfit for human use, the problem seems unlikely to abate any time soon.
