Gonzales to be Investigated

"Congress must not allow anyone, including the Attorney General, to continue to mislead us." - Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), at a press conference just now, announcing a Senate call for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. The request for appointment will be made to the solicitor general, who handles matters the attorney general has recused himself from, to appoint a special counsel from outside the Justice Department.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said that she "really had no choice" in the matter, that Americans look to the attorney general "to be above reproach." She said that the main points of investigation would be whether the Justice Department had been politicized, to evaluate Gonzales pattern of misleading statements before Congress, and his refusal to enforce congressional subpoenas.

Update: Suburban Guerilla discusses Josh Marshall's Gonzales conversion to considering impeachment. Also of note, the FBI director's testimony today directly contradicted Gonzales' testimony.

The Daily Show did a great job the other night of crystallizing the lies and obstructionism of Gonzalez. It was hysterical, but also a sad commentary on how far we have fallen from the Constitution since 2000.

We live in an age where we have seen the worst president, Secretary of Defense, Attorney General, and, of course, Vice President of Darkness in this nation's history, and all within the span of one administration (that would be the W. Bush Admin. for all your wingnut lurkers)
