Thought for the Day

If there's an environmentalist hell, I'm probably going there.

I admit it: I like reading things on paper better than on a computer screen. I like writing things that are important to me out on a sheet of notebook paper more than typing them up. Logistical considerations intervene, but in my heart, I know I'm a sinner.

For that, and the long showers. Dammit. If there's a Green Jesus, does he take make-up work? Will I be pardoned if I purchase carbon credits or work to promote policies that encourage tree planting and increase the soil's water-carrying capacity? I better hope so.

Paper consumption is not the environmental sin it's been made out to be. Most paper sold in America is produced by wood farms designed specifically for the purpose, causing virtually no permanent deforestation.

Moreover, the preference for paper type is well known in technological circles and a "paper view" type text screen is already available for certain applications, though it is prohibitively expensive for the casual consumer market at this time.

It's much more important to conserve vehicle fuel and have an energy efficient home.

If you're really worried about forestry products, then get developers worldwide to use anything but new trees for support planking in construction. That's the biggest waste going on in that arena.

Thomas is correct for the most part. I would only add that we as a people should nip one growing habit in the bud now. Too many people are getting in the habit of leaving their home PCs on even when not at work. Part of it is a remote access issue, but given the amount of electricity esentially wasted if enough people do it, that could become our next great "non-point" problem.

If we people avoid papers because of environmental problems, then what about the e-waste(like old keyboards, computer peripherals, etc.,),what we going to do for that?
