Thought for the Day

A scientist's claim to be accurately reflecting reality in their published work: A jury of my jealous peers have picked this paper to pieces, and will publicly, painfully, pitilessly expose any flaws they find. If they find any evidence of dishonesty, my career will likely be over.

A journalist's claim to be accurately reflecting reality in their published work: My editor read this before it went to press and if there are errors, they'll have to print a correction. If my readers believe they've found any evidence of dishonesty, our ombudsman will take them to task for their incivility and I may have to make the cable news rounds to discuss my perspective. If I steal another writer's work, my career will likely be over.
