On April 18, 1906, San Francisco woke at 5:13 am to one of the largest earthquakes recorded in the United States. After experiencing the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, I've been a student of earthquakes and the 1906 quake has always fascinated me. The USGS has a great piece on this quake that includes this piece showing what the seismogram looked like in Gottingen, Germany compared to the seismogram of the Loma Prieta quake.
For as long as I can remember, the 1906 quake was said to register at 8.3 on the Richter scale. Recent studies have reset that magnitude to 7.7 or 7.9 - still a huge quake, but not the monster once thought.
