Bogota, when did you live there? I was there once sometime between 1951 and 1954 because, as I understand it, our plane which picked us up in Panama had problems and as the pilot lived in Bogota we went there instead of landing at Cartagena. There was gun fire in the streets that night but my most vivid memory is of being cold. We were dressed for Cartagena. We were the unexpected guests of another US military family and my mother wouldn't ask for another blanket. Strange the things one remembers. I would have been around 10 years old at the time.

Gail, I left Bogata (where I was born) when I was a baby in 1951 on to the less tropical climes of Casper and then Bismark. My dad was a petroleum geologist and so we got to move a bunch, but not as often as kids in the military.

Certainly Bogata would have been a lot cooler than Cartagena as its elevation is over a mile high. My mom has a story about what it was like living in Bogata when the 1948 revolution started.

Dunedin - great choice. I assume you got to see the albatross colony and the beach where the penguins (I forget what kind) swim in and waddle up on shore for the night.

Eli, yes, seeing the nesting yellow-eyed penguins and albatrosses was one of the real highlights of my visit to New Zealand. I loved that headlands and the variety of cormorants as well. It was fascinating being in the Pacific Southeast and have it feel so much like the Pacific Northwest.
