Musical Interlude

Asha BhosleLast Sunday, NPR's Weekend Edition had a piece on an amazing collaboration between the Kronos Quartet and Bollywood's most famous singer, Asha Bhosle. The music is haunting in the way that Indian music can be.

One of the most astonishing things was to realize that although Asha is in her seventies, her voice is still incredibly beautiful. Asha started singing when she was 14 years old and has recorded more than 120,000 songs.

The music on the new CD was written by Asha's late husband who was featured on NPR's World Cafe program here.

If you find this music captivates you as much as it did me, you can buy a copy of the CD here.

So what are you listening to these days?

Here are some things that (based on this one sample) might be of interest. Some nordic electro-folk: Garmarna, Hedningarna, and some other groups on the "Nordic Roots" sampler CDs (which are quite a steal at $6 new). Soul Coughing -- "Ruby Vroom"; Portishead -- "Dummy".

There's also a bunch of electronic stuff -- Juno Reactor, Amon Tobin, Underworld, Sneaker Pimps, Leftfield -- and metal -- System of a Down, A Perfect Circle -- but I'm not sure you'd be interested.

Personally, I've been listening to Steve Martin's The Pleasure Of My Company as a book on tape, a bunch of keyboard-based stuff--Ryuchi Sakamoto, Joe Jackson--and the songs of Kander & Ebb.

Thanks for pointing out this piece, what a delight!

I have been listening to Surfjan Stevens (Illinoise), Fiery Furnaces (Blueberry Boat, etc.) and Aimee Mann (Bachelor No. 2). Not super current . . .but there you have it.
