This probably shouldn't be surprising.

At the end of August, we posted about the resignation of Susan Wood from her post as head of the Office of Women's Health in the US Food & Drug Adminstration. Wood quit because of the FDA's continued refusal to make emergency contraception more easily available.

It's obvious that FDA head Lester Crawford didn't take the reasons for Wood's resignation very seriously. Yesterday, he appointed a male veterinarian as temporary head of the Office of Women's Health. [Link dead. Go here for essentially the same info .]

We bet the new guy is a real expert. Just like Michael Brown was at FEMA.

hey magpie, that link from MS Magazine has been deleted. What I found when I went out to the Office of Women's Health is a news release that a Ms. Theresa A. Toigo has been appointed acting director. Wonder if the original piece was a spoof that someone was playing on MS....

Perhaps it was someone from the OWH because the current news release has the following line at the top:

This is a revision of this statement posted earlier on September 16.

actually, i suspect that the appointment was made, then hastily withdrawn when it looked like a firestorm was going to result. i found alderson's name listed as acting head of the office of women's health on this list of the dept of health and human services' coordinating committee on women's health. either the hoax proliferated *very* fast, or alderson's appointment was made and then withdrawn.

hi magpie, it looks like your new link has been "fixed" now as well. Our government at work again - doing Winston's work in the Ministry of Truth.

that's not the only "veterinarian" on board at Women's Health.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Dr. Lester M. Crawford announced today the appointment of Rear Admiral Linda R. Tollefson to the position of Assistant Commissioner for Science. Most recently, RADM Tollefson served as Deputy Director of the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM). In her new position, she will also serve as Coordinator for Commissioned Corps Affairs at FDA and direct FDA's Offices of Women's Health and Orphan Products Development.
