A Canticle For Lieberman (reprieve)

Pacific Views theater presents the continuation of a short work of fiction. Any resemblance of the characters to persons living or dead is purely in the interests of parable, satire, and entertainment. See the fiction archive for previous installments.

"Paul? Are you still awake?" She was whispering, just in case the answer was no.

"Huh? Yeah, yeah, I'm awake. What is it, babe?" He put his arm around Robin's waist and the rearrangement of the covers was the only sound for a little while.

"I think I helped start an avalanche while I thought I was helping to build a snowman. Just a game gone horribly, horribly wrong, you know."

"Well, mrff, since you have to drive to Canada to get snow anymore, I'll take a wild guess that all I'll get out of you is parables, no matter how late I stay up asking what this is really about."

"Hah! Of course."

"The only thing to do about an avalanche is to call the rescue squad and hope they make it in time for the people downhill. It's ... ugh ... one in the morning. Are you going to sleep, or are drastic measures called for?"

"What did you have in mind?"

"Recite budget reports, can do it asleep now. 'S guaranteed ..."

"My eyelids are getting heavier already."

"Mnrff."

To be continued.
