Saving Social Security, One Turncoat at a Time

Thanks to a tip at Kos (in a post with so many comments that it takes up all my computer's free memory), I read over at Talking Points Memo that Lieberman is likely to flip on Social Security. Likely to stab the party in the back at a point in time when Bush's plan is floundering so badly that not even Republican's want to grab it with both hands.

The point has been made at Kos that Lieberman probably already knows how much hate mail he's going to get from Democrats, and how much he already doesn't care. We could always get together a pledge to fundraise for anyone who runs against him in the 2006 primary, but it may be too late, and he'll probably be sucking out of the Republican fundraising trough by then.

If Lieberman was ever under the delusion that he was popular with Democrats, the 2004 primary probably disabused him of the notion. So if he cared about our opinion at any point in the past, that time is likely at an end. But his Senate colleagues are another matter.

My proposal is that we save our breath calling Lieberman's office, and instead call our own Senators. Tell them that not only do you oppose privatization, but you hope they make it abundantly clear to wavering colleagues like Lieberman that they won't put up with it. Tell them to act now to enforce caucus discipline. Hopefully, enough of them will listen.

I agree with you on contacting Lieberman, he's a tool of the Right Wing, nothing we say will persuade him. He's under the delusion that he will be able to 'negotiate' with the Bushies.

All Bush wants is one Democrat to fold, 'cause there goes our united front. Bush will capitalize on any weakness.

I contacted Sens. Murray and Cantwell immediately upon hearing about Joe-das Eschariot. I asked them to remind Joe which party he belongs to.

He may be a full-fledged Republican by summertime.

Why don't we drum these traitors out of the corps of democracy? Why do we tolerate their weak kneed cravishness? Why do we have to listen to some Bourbon dinosaur rant against us from the podium of the Repuglian Convention? Why must we be driven head long into another deafeat in 2008 by the chariot wheels of another Bodacea? Why are we ashamed of our Congressional leaders inability to talk the talk and walk the walk?

Gore in 2008--Because he won the first time!

Encouraging Senatorial peer pressure on Lieberman is a great idea. Any chance you could get someone on dKos to diary and try to get wider attention for this?

And here are the missing links to contact our Senators:

Email Senator Patty Murray or phone (206) 553-5545.

Email Senator Maria Cantwell or phone 206-220-6400.
