California supremes toss out lesbian/gay marriages.

As expected, the California Supreme Court has ruled that San Francisco's mayor violated state law when he authorized the issuance of marriage licesnses to same-sex couples. In doing so, however, the court also tossed out the more than 4,000 marriages that took place during the month that San Francisco was allowing same-sex couples to wed.

Today's ruling does not answer the larger question of whether California's state constitution permits same-sex marriages. The justices ruled only on the narrow question of whether the SF marriages were legal.
