Haisai Ojisan!

Okinawan musician Shoukichi Kina has been elected to Japan's parliament as a member of the opposition Democratic Party. Kina ran on a platform opposing Japan's involvement in the Iraq occupation and advocating independence for Okinawa.

Kina and his group Champloose are largely responsible for the marriage of traditional Okinawan music with electric instruments during the 1970s and 1980s. (This magpie almost drove off the road when we heard Kina's 'Haisai Ojisan' [an audio sample is here] on our way to work in the mid-1980s.)

For more info on Shoukichi Kina's music, this article from the Japan Times is a good place to start. This collection of album reviews is also worth a look.
