Oregon county to marry same-sex couples.

The county that this magpie lives in, as a matter of fact.

KGW television in Portland reports that Multnomah County will begin issuing licenses for same-sex marriages tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. Multnomah County includes the city of Portland, which is the largest in the state.

No Multnomah County commissioners were available to comment on the decision but the board issued a short statement on Tuesday night saying their legal counsel supports the controversial move.

"Based on a legal opinion released (Tuesday) by the county attorney, a majority of the (Multnomah) Board of County Commissioners supports a policy change to allow the county to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples," the statement said.

So far, there has been no comment from the offices of Governor Ted Kuglongoski or state attorney general Hardy Myers (both Democrats).

More: We have to admit that Pandagon's take on this story is just a bit perkier than ours.

And we notice that at least one media outlet is putting Multnomah County in the wrong state.

Update: WCNC finally changed their headline, which originally placed Multnomah County in the state of Washington.

State officials were holding off on comment until they had it confirmed from the County itself, rather than media reports.

Meanwhile, the City of Portland will have a statement tomorrow. An open question is just how soon actual marriages will begin, because in Oregon there's a three-day waiting period between license and marriage, unless you get a waiver from the County.
