WA Needs New Primary System
Democratic state party Chair Paul Berendt is urging Democrats to support SB 6745, the Modified Montana open primary legislation, and to oppose the top two or Cajun primary system. The Seattle P-I examines both systems.
Jacqueline M. P. Passey, a local Libertarian, approves of the Montana system because it's friendlier to third parties. Anyone with Green leanings should take note, because your candidates would also have a hard time becoming a 'top two vote getter' and going on to a general election.
To me, the possibility of ending up with a general election ballot choice where the candidates were all from one party sounds like a disaster, no matter which party that happened to be. It's good for legislators to get the fear of Jeebus put into them around election time, and there's nothing to cure what ails them like a brisk competition.
If you have a preference in this matter, call the Legislative Hotline at 1-800-562-6000 and get yourself heard. Or, find email addresses for state congressmen and senators.
