Democrats win special House election in Kentucky.

The results are in from Kentucky's sixth congressional district, and Democrat Ben Chandler decisively beat Republican Alice Forgy Kerr. With all almost 90 percent of the precincts reporting, the figures are:

Chandler   55.1% 55.7%
Kerr            42.9% 42.4%%

This is the first special election for Congress that the Democrats have won since 1991, near the end of the first Bush administration. Kerr lost after a campaign in which she attempted to turn the election into a referendum on Dubya's performance as president.

Only time will tell whether the Kentucky results are an isolated case or a bellweather for the November election. But we bet that Dubya's advisors aren't particularly happy to have lost an election in the South, which is supposedly Bush Country.
