Shorter Monbiot

A giant media merger with Comcast will make Disney less creepy, and man, are they ever creepy.

I think Monbiot surpasses Disney in his imagination. His ability to contrive new ways to make America out to be the Great Satan makes him a sort of editorial Michael Jordan, as far The Guardian is concerned.

Monbiot's conclusions about Comcast indicate a bewildering confusion about the nature of mergers. Mergers are incited by the difference between the perceived future revenue stream of a company's assets, and the actual market value of those assets at the time a tender offer is made. Comcast is attempting to buy Disney because its "empire" includes "intellectual property rights" worth more than Comcast expects to pay for it.

"If the attack means that Disney is losing its ability to shape the minds of the world's children," then it would not occur. Sorry, Monbiot should get out of his petulant nationalistic circle-jerk and learn something about the subject at hand.

PS: Yes, I would be thrilled to see Disney go the way of vaudeville. But it's not as sinister or as odious as a lot of other pop culture, including a lot of stuff originating from our shores.

Actually, I think Monbiot is a scab, or at least dishonest about his intent. He normally writes in a way that would critique unfair globalization and bad corporate policy, only slip in the odd zinger or two about it being a really good idea.

The points he often ends up making sharply contradict the best interests of the people whose readership he seems to be courting. He's entitled to believe what he wants, but I stopped trusting him some time ago.
