A New Way To Engage

Has the Democratic party learned anything from the Dean campaign? Maybe they have. From the Roots is the Senate Democrats' new blog, done with Scoop like Daily Kos so that readers can keep diaries. (And they had the sublime taste to link to us here at Pacific Views ;)

The party leadership thinks it not improbable that we could take back the Senate this year, and that would be a welcome sign. Especially since a willingness to lower the bar to public dialogue might make them more responsive to public concern. It's an olive branch, at the very least. We might as well give them a chance to prove there's something substantial behind it, and work to install a Democrat in the Majority Leader position.

President AWOL has got to go, and if the Reserve document Kevin scrounged up is anything to go by, there's the chance that he may have negative coattails. It isn't enough to send him back to Crawford. Let's resolve to send DeLay back to Sugarland.

Then we can resume the pastime of giving elected Democrats merry hell until we're well satisfied that they'll consistently act in the public good. I say we act quickly, so that by the time they begin to wonder what they've gotten themselves into, it will be too late.

Nice.

Is there really a possibility of retaking the Senate even with all the retiring Southern Dems? That would be sweet.

We will pick up a seat in ILL and I read at Kos that OK is a good possibility. Bowles is reasonably strong in NC and may hold the Edwards seat. I know nothing about SC or La.

Where else do we have shots?

You know, they don't explicitly go into that. I've only been following the presidential showdown myself, and marginally following what's been going on in my state.

Here in WA, both senators are Democrats, both will probably win re-election. The only other I have a fuzzy recollection of reading about was the possibility that Erskine Bowles might take a seat in NC.

Anyone know what would happen to Kerry's seat?

I hate to say it, but I decided to do some looking and taking back the Senate is going to be pretty near impossible. My non-expert take on it is that 13 seats each are safe. We have to hold Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina, and South Carolina due to incumbents not running, as well as a maybe battle in Arkansas. The Repubs have trouble in Illinois, maybe Oklahoma, and with a perfect candidate, Georgia, perhaps. Basically, I bring all this up because it just highlights, for me, how critical getting the White House is stopping the mess the Repubs are making with our economy, world position, environment, education, etc...,

Don't hang your hats on a Democratic Senate. It is the White House, and Kerry, or continued Republican rule as far as I can tell.
