Inspiring

I finally got the time to listen to and watch Al Gore's speech on global warming today and I have to say, it was truly inspiring. The copy of the speech posted to Moveon.org (as prepared) was a pale copy of what he really delivered. He ended with:
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand…
There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.”
I have no doubt if he had delivered this speech in 2000, nothing - no cheating, no voting machine fraud, no disenfrancisement of voters - could have kept him from the White House.
Moveon.org is truly to be commended that we finally got to hear this speech. In the vast wasteland of public media, they are there to publish and promote those unwelcome and unwanted views which exist outside the SCLM.

It is good to see the Al Gore who wrote Earth in the Balance re-emerging. Perhaps there is yet hope that American politics may yet embrace environmental sanity, as the American people already so clearly do.
And you are correct: the written text is no substitute for the speech as delivered. To those who haven't watched it yet: watching will take you longer than reading, but you will be well rewarded for your time spent. Watch all the way to the end... Gore's flame grows gradually, but it grows bright indeed.
