Perfect Storm Volunteers

Photo: Judy from San Antonio, pink sweater on the left, sits with a group of volunteers training to canvas.
John from Maui, 56: "Yesterday, I stopped at lunch time at a little Greek restaurant near the Marriott, had my Dean sticker on. Went in to have a sandwich, and as I was leaving, the owner came up to me. He said, 'You're supporting Dean. I'm undecided between Gephardt and Dean.'
"And I said, 'Undecided between Gephardt and Dean? There's no comparison. Are you aware that /Gephardt] supported the war in Iraq?' And that was right on, because he was really opposed to the war in Iraq. And then he was interested in Dean's healthcare policies, which we discussed. And when I was through, he said 'You won me over, I'm going to support Dean.' I said 'great.'"
Rose from Vermont, 19: After a discouraging morning canvassing, "The last house we were going to had an Edwards sign in the yard, but we decided to go to the door anyway. So, Matt from Minneapolis went up to the door, and we were a little worried that he was going to get rejected. But he talked to the guy for a while, and it turned out that some community group that he was associated with had put the Edwards sign in his lawn. He was actually a Dean supporter, and wanted a Dean sign which we put out for him."
Judy from San Antonio, Grandmother, Type A, Democratic party county coordinator: "I had the most wonderful canvassing experience last night in the bitter cold of Iowa. Well, bitter cold compared to Southern Texas. I met a young mother, single mother, in a very tiny little house, with a young son named Scott, who is 9 years old. And Scott is a political junkie. Scott is planning on running for Governor of Iowa, and he knows about everything in this caucus there is to know. He's watched all the debates. He can go over every candidate tooth and nail, however, he remains undecided.
"...Their major issue is to elect a person that will allow them to have the services needed to keep their lives together. And Scott is going to vote with his mother, he assures me. His mother is a major Dean supporter, and she has a sign out in front of her house as we speak. We're still working on Scott."

What you are doing in Iowa is very important! It is only round one! There are three candidates with their whole existance on the line! Gov. Dean is not one of them. Reguardless of the outcome, there will be a tommrow for the Dean movement. It may take until Pennsylvania and New York to win this thing! We will win!!!
