Crossing the border.

A little over a year ago, this magpie drove across most of Canada. When we made our final return to the US, we crossed from St Stephens, New Brunswick into Calais, Maine. The border cops were polite and fast, and other than having to deal with their strange preoccupation with whether we were bringing illegal citrus fruit into the US, we had no complaints. (Don't get us going about our crossing from Manitoba into North Dakota earlier in the trip, though.)

Recently, Canadian writer Glenn Walton and some friends were crossing into the US at that same border point, at Calais. Their experience was entirely different from ours.

Something unpleasant and dark has been let out of the bag by post-9-11 hysteria, and it won't be going back in for the foreseeable future.

like i said, don't even get me going about when i crossed the border from manitoba into north dakota. the best i can say is that they didn't leave the trunk of my car in too much of a mess.

and at least i wasn't the poor guy ahead of me from alberta ... they took him & his car off to the big building where they go over the whole vehicle with vacuum cleaners & tweezers & xrays. or something ...
