Saturday Reading
Although the week was quiet in the blogosphere with most people attending to their real life families and friends, there were several interesting posts and articles that I'd like to recommend.
How To Save The World has a number of interesting pieces up right now, but the one I'd like to especially recommend is his post on What Keeps Executives Up At Night. It is a very thought-provoking discussion of how much the work world has changed from the expansive and optimistic times in the 90s to the harsh, miserly and pennypinching world that we find today. The market place jungle is creating a hostile work environment, but it doesn't have to be like that. Dave's observations and suggestions are well-worth considering.
Billmon has an exceptional post up about the twilight of the neocons and a followon about who actually is a neocon in the administration. Kevin Drum also had a post on the subject of failure of policy on the part of the neocons that is particularly good. And Tristero provides a lesson on epistemology and how this shapes the world-views of the right versus the left. It certainly captures the Bush White House philosophical outlook to a T.
Are Liberals ready to lead the Democratic party to victory? Liberal Oasis thinks so and gives some advice on how to make this chance count.
Seeing the Forest has the best description I've seen on the betrayal that allowed for the Bush plan for logging the Tongess Forest.
Got that? It was a set-up. The right-wingers in Alaska sue the Bush government, the Bush government agrees to "settle," giving the Alaskan right-wingers everything they ask for.
Corporate cronism and the war in Iraq is the topic of this piece by Juan Cole. The moral clarity of this administration continues to be underwhelming.
Eric Alterman exposes the war the Washington pundits (and insiders) have declared on Howard Dean. Dean is running as an outsider (just how often are insiders elected unless they are incumbents?) and this seems to have driven the pundicracy nuts. We always knew the next election was going to get nasty, but it would be nice if the guys on our side of the debate would spend more time worrying about a Bush victory than a Dean victory.
Patriot Act II. Pieces of this have already been enacted. Avedon Carol and Tom Spencer bring us the bad news.
Please don't miss reading the three part series that the NY Times did last week on the state of OSHA and worker safety. This series shows that the Grey Lady can still remember what the real charter for the Paper of Record should be: solid investigative reporting that provides citizens information about what their government is doing.
Give peace a chance: when looking for some thoughtful books on how to work for a more peaceful world, you should check out the work of Mike Palecek, a peace activist from Iowa.
