Adding insult to injury.
This magpie doesn't blog much about our personal life, but there are times when we have to make an exception. Like now.
On Friday, we lost our job writing security manuals at a very large bank. We weren't actually employed by the bank, mind you, but were actually a contractor placed by an agency that supplies technical workers to big companies that don't want to hire 'real' employees (and have to pay all those nasty benefits). The layoff didn't come without warning; there was a memo in November warning that all of us contractors could become history in mid-December.
And it's that memo that's the reason for this post.
The bean-counter who sent out the order to get rid of all the bank's contractors by the Friday before Christmas had the unmitigated gall or the complete obliviousness known only by those who don't live paycheck to paycheck to call the layoff memo 'Home for the Holidays.'
Like this magpie is wont to say in situations like this: We couldn't have made it up if we'd tried.

Hope you're able to weather this development. Keep the faith.
Home for the Holidays
I'm sure the person who wrote the memo will be hired soon by BushCo to come up with Orwellian names for the next batch of destructive policies (ala Healthy Forests and Clear Skies).
Posted by: NTodd on December 23, 2003 10:20 AMWanted to say that over the last month or two I've become a fan of your blog.
And that of Dec 24, I too will be jobless and cashless. Somehow, all the strong economic figures don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy mixed-up world.
Posted by: kim on December 23, 2003 11:14 AMI spent some time jobless from Feb 1991 to April 1992...
So, having been there and done that, what can we do to help?
Posted by: Darryl Pearce on December 23, 2003 02:24 PMthanks for asking what people can do to help -- just the thought really helps. luckily my unemployment check will be enough to carry me for awhile, but who knows when i'll have another job given the bad economy in oregon.
probably the best thing anyone can do to help me (and everyone else who's unemployed right now) is to work *really* hard to get dubya out of the white house & back to crawford. hopefully there's a spider hole waiting for him ...
Posted by: Magpie on December 23, 2003 03:52 PMMay this Scrooge "enjoy" a similar fate - and soon!
Posted by: pessimist on December 23, 2003 08:00 PMThat sucks :-(
I hope you find a new job soon. I'm looking for one too and not finding much :-(
Posted by: Al-Muhajabah on December 24, 2003 07:00 AMI'm sorry. Here's hoping that the next year finds you gainfully employed for someone who has a clue.
Wife lost her job in October, so holidays are a little tight this year. YOu have friends in the ether. Good luck. (Love your blog.)
