Potheads for Arnie
Did medical marijuana advocates give Arnold the edge? If so, clearly smoking a joint has long since ceased to mean that you can't be elected for the rest of your life:
While California’s political leaders toasted Arnold Schwarzenegger as their new governor Monday, “Lefties for Arnie” who hope he will loosen the state’s marijuana laws held their own inauguration party complete with a “Grope the Governor” display and tofu bratwurst.
But it brings up another disturbing issue... When the Democratic party can no longer reliably even get the weed vote, we're in big trouble.
Posted by natasha at November 19, 2003 11:24 AM | TrackBackThere is no reason for the "weed lobby" to favor either republicans or democrats, since both are equally hypocritical and myopic on the issue of blanket prohibition. Furthermore, the crusade against smoking in general is spearheaded by liberals. One of the few newspapers to stick up for the minority rights of (cigarette) smokers, and speak out against a few elected officials who want to dictate the behavior of others, is the rabidly conservative Washington Times. So why should potheads vote for democrats?
Posted by: charles on November 19, 2003 07:10 PMCharles is essentially correct; Davis never gave good citizens who like to toke--or think medical marijuana is necessary-any reason to vote for him.
Liberals espouse a libertarian stance toward ganja, but Democrats do not.
For instance, I wrote all three of my CA reps to please do something, anything, for Tommy Chong. They never even replied. The always replied in the past with those form letters, but to defend a bong-maker, well, that they would never do, not even to the point of answering my letter.
I'd guess 4% of Californians feel paasionately enough about this to make it their primary variable in selecting a candidate. Since there's hardly a weed constituency it's not surprising there are no weed candidates.
