Environmental Vote 2004
This month the environmental online magazine, Grist, has a great special edition on the 2004 election.
Mark Hertsgaard has an article that discusses how the environmental organizations are teaming up with other progressive organizations (like MoveOn.org) to provide the most effective offense against Bush. Finally, Bush has found a way to unit people:
"George W. Bush said when he was running for president that he would be the great unifier, not the divider, and damned if he hasn't been the greatest unifier of the environmental movement since I've been in it," says John Passacantando, the executive director of Greenpeace USA. "And that's true within the entire progressive movement and beyond. From tongue-studded anarchists to business-oriented think tanks, we've all come to realize that Bush represents the greatest threat to all that we hold dear."
Although America Votes (the progressive coalition Hertsgaard talks about) is not endorsing any specific candidate, Grist thinks you should know where the candidates stand on this issue. For interviews with Dean, Kerry, Lieberman and Kucinch on where they stand, go here. (I believe Grist plans to interview all the candidates before the primaries start.)
There is a lot more available in this special edition including a pro and con for a separate Green vote in 2004 and an answer to whether Bush's Crawford ranch really is off the grid.
Please do bookmark Grist for future reference. It is one of the first places I look for updates on what is happening with environmental politics these days.
Thank so much for the url for Grist, Mary. I've been meaning to get more reading done in this area.
I trust your judgment on this implicitly; the site is indeed bookmarked and I gave them a donation. I'm an offical frog kisser--according to them.
