Notes from San Jose
How spoiled I've become using my home high speed internet connection to keep up with the news and follow my favorite blogs. Now that I'm in transit, I'm reminded that life is not all high-speed bandwidths. Now I'm trying to not get too impatient when it takes much, much longer to load a page. And I complain because 28K is not very fast -- but then I remember, I've been around the computer business long enough to have used 300 baud modems for my work (very, very, very slow).
I'm in transit because my job is moving south (just in time for winter!) and I'm bound for the balmy and less rainy weather of the Bay Area in South San Jose. I'm not sure where I'll finally find a place -- whether I decide to go back to Santa Cruz or whether I opt for someplace closer to work. (I'm not sure I want to spend hours commuting, then there would be even less time for blogs or politics!)
The move is filled with the good and the bad:
Good: job gets better
Bad: have to leave all my friends in the Portland office
Good: get to see my bay area friends more often
Bad: won't get to see my Portland friends as much
Good: work will be more challenging
Bad: there will be less time for politics and blogging
Good: renting means someone else takes care of the plumbing
Bad: I'll miss my house and garden
Good: I'll get to meet bay area bloggers
Bad: I'll have to see less of those Portland bloggers and Democratic activists
Good: the bay area has some great birds
Bad: I'll miss the sandhill cranes on Sauvie Island
Good: the bay area weather is some of the best in the world
Bad: I'll miss the green of Portland, and even that god awful rain
Life will be complex, confusing and frustrating for the next month or so, but I hope when I'm settled in enough, have gotten my new job under control enough and have found a neighborhood with highspeed interconnect and decent reception of a good public radio station to start posting more regularly -- especially when Natasha wants to have more backup.
On another note: I got this very funny joke from my friend that I thought I would share:
Werid fcat
Aoccdrnig to a rseaerch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by it slef but the wrod as a wlohe.
How does this affect the whole-language vs phonics argument?
Posted by Mary at September 19, 2003 01:23 AM | TrackBackHey, Mary ... Oregon's loss is California's gain! I for one welcome you with open arms to the Golden State ... and especially to the San Francisco Bay Area. The way I see it, California has just gained one more SANE person. Lately it seems like sanity has fled this place, so I feel better now that you're here ... even if you haven't been around long enough to qualify to NOT cast your ballot for a movie star/muscleman for governor. I know if you could vote, you'd do the SANE thing.
One piece of advice (even though you didn't ask for it). KEEP THE COMMUTE REASONABLE! You are NOT in Oregon anymore. Commutes around here'll kill you. Even if you have to pay a little more to get something close to work, it'll be worth it vs. what you'll spend on wear and tear on your car AND on yourself. You need to be free to blog and to be your politically active self!
OK. End of advice. I got to meet the famous 'paradox' last week. And I'll look forward to meeting you as well once you get all settled in ...
We'll miss you in the northwest, but I second Pat's assessment that California is lucky to have you. I don't, however, envy you the move.
Best luck in your new home :)
Posted by: natasha on September 19, 2003 06:38 PMNow for many years the land of California was ruled by a wise khedive who meet nightly with angels and ministers of grace. But it came to pass in the third year of his reign that a hateful serpent was released into the land, a serpent endowed with thirteen heads which took all that was exquisite and well ordered, and bit it and caused it to wither; the servants of the people, the guardians of the streets and the sages of the madrassa, even unto the most illustrious. And for five and twenty years hath this vile thirteen headed worm afflicted the land.
And the khedive himself was poisoned and made like unto a jackass, and he forsook the paths of wisdom; and when it took it into his heart to strive for the senate he was defeated and fell unto a new khedive sent by Ahriman. Then there was sorrow and blight in the land of California and the khedive (whose name was Deukmeijian) departed and was succeeded by the most wicked, the most hateful ifreet that e'er was, the abhominable and loathsome khedive U'ilsin. And U'ilson was lord and master of hell, and unleashed the deev of bigotry and greed, and the world gaped to see such evil walk the earth. Yet the Californians repented not of their ways...
Posted by: Firdowsi on September 20, 2003 12:39 AMNote: Firdowsi gets his opinions of California politics from me. But I think he doesn't get how awful Gov. Wilson really was.
Posted by: James R MacLean on September 20, 2003 12:42 AMGosh, I'm honored that Firdowsi stopped by to give his opinion. I don't remember seeing him leaving a comment on a blog before. Cool. Amazing that he has such a good grasp of California politics. Which, by the way will be an interesting story to watch.
